I have been making these for about as many years since they were discovered for keeping you a bit cooler in the rediculously hot weather.
These are made special for firefighters out of standard fire resistent material- UL Certified to NFPA 1977 and sewn with Nomex thread.
The plastic crystals hold about 300 times their weight in water to give them natural flame resistence.
They work by keeping the blood flow through your neck a few degrees cooler and thereby keep your brain and body that little bit cooler to make you feel more alert and lessen the chances for being uncomfortablely closer to heat stroke.
It can be worn around the forehead like a bandana or under a ball cap or helmet.
These are wonderful for those that have body heat regulation problems especially when nearing the point of heat exhaustion.
Many forest firefighters keep them tucked under their shirts, to give a slow evaporation and a bit of cooling.
*****NOTE: These are not made with the fine powder -"soak for 3-5 minutes ones . These are made for ' 'professional' cooling. They take a couple of hours to fully soak for maximum benefit. They are made with a mixture of small & medium grade crystals for staying cooler longer and lasting longer.*****
Once they are intially swelled up, you can recool them every few hours by resoaking for about 10 minutes in cool water.
Keep an extra one in a cooler to give a good changeover for a great blast of coolness. Or, keep in a cooler for emergency first aid as a cold compress
Afterwards, you can hang dry them, and reuse them.
Plus, as a bonus, you get a non- fire resistent one (a different color), for normal hot day relief away from the fire zone.
Measure approximately 2 inches by 38-40 inches with about a 23 inch cooling channel for maximum comfortable cooling area.
