One of the most freqently asked questions I receive is in regard to suggested reading material for veneering. Of course, I recommend checking out the veneering pages on the JoeWoodworker.com website (I hear that "Joe" guy wrote a few pages about veneering and vacuum pressing). But if you are looking for another great resource for veneering information, Mike Burton's Veneering: A Foundation Course is the great source.
This book was out of print and hard to find for quite a while but it was revised and published again in June of 2006. The new version includes a section on marquetry which is a great compliment to the other chapters. Mike Burton covers various forms of veneer application including vacuum pressing, iron-on veneering, and more traditional methods. The book also includes a few well designed veneering projects. One thing that I really enjoyed is the author's down-to-earth writing style. He writes as if he were speaking directly to you and his comments are often hilarious and always insightful.
Requiring no expensive machinery, veneering offers woodworkers tremendous opportunities for creativity and for using woods that may be rare, expensive, or structurally weak in their solid form. With this 240 page revised version (which now includes a brand-new section on marquetry) woodworkers can learn all the basics, from terminology to materials, tools to techniques. There’s detailed instruction on substrates and bonding; preparing the wood; cutting, coloring, and strengthening the veneer; and various methods of finishing and polishing for long-lasting beauty. The exquisite projects range from boxes to a blanket chest, from a kidney-shaped desk to a round dining table. Like having a master craftsman close by, this unique course will help take woodworking skills to new heights.
