Ad is submitted by poster: Building the Climax, by Kozo Hiraoka, published by Village Press, Traverse City, Mich., 1983, 1984, 1985, 1989. 8½ x 11 hardcover, 248 pages, ISBN 0-914104-13-6
Please note this book is new, not used, with a new dust jacket.
Kozo Hiraoka has now completed all three major geared locomotives in ¾” scale — first the Shay, then the Heisler and now the Climax — each first serialized in Live Steam magazine, and then compiled and re-edited in book form. Each has inspired readers to go on to build an engine on their own.
Few live steam modelers who have written for Live Steam magazine have had greater a impact on the hobby than Kozo. His clever and ingenious methods of design and fabrication have made it possible for even novice machinist / modelers to create engines that are beautiful, and that function with power and predictability. Even if the reader chooses not to build the Climax locomotive, there are wonderful lessons to be learned about machining, and approaches to simplifying a job in the shop.
With the Climax locomotive project, you can now fabricate every single part on your engine from raw stock, and not have to purchase any (potentially) expensive pre-made parts. There are no castings to fool with either, just clear and concise directions for making each part, simply and correctly, often from material you can pull right out of your scrap box. Kozo’s drawings and photographs provide you with firm stepping-stones to a complete, operating locomotive in ¾”, 1”, or 1½” scales. He even shows you how to create your own skew bevel gears and pressure gauge. Several proud builders of the Climax in a variety of scales have also contributed to this book so the reader will see what others can accomplish.

If you want to use media (book rate) mail please wait at least four weeks before you contact us to inquire about the whereabouts of your book. Global Priority Mail is $18.00 to most countries. PLEASE NOTE - NOT ALL COUNTRIES !!!
Global Priority Mail to Canada is $12.00.
First Class International Mail to Canada is $8.35.
First Class International Mail to most other countries is usually more than Global Priority Mail or just a little bit less, so we no longer list it as an option.
Our experience in the past few years is that MAILING OVERSEAS HAS BECOME SOMEWHAT RISKIER AND MUCH, MUCH SLOWER. We have seen a handful of books take nearly two months to be delivered. Italy particularly seems to have problems: books we have mailed to Italy seem to always take at least three or four weeks. We’re sorry, but there is nothing we can do about the postal services of our respective countries.
