This information is not available anywhere else and is especially valuable to anyone building an EDM machine from plans or books of EDM construction projects. This is for the builder who wants to take his EDM project to the next level and construct a machine that performs more like the commercial machines costing tens of thousands of dollars.
Here's Ben to tell you how this came to be:
"My introduction to the world of EDM came at of all places, a YARDSALE. I purchased two boxes of old Popular Science, Popular Mechanics etc. magazines. In one of the magazines the basic theory of the EDM process was described along with details of how to build a manually operated EDM.
I built the little machine and really became obsessed with the EDM principle. I soon discovered that these machines would cut anything that will conduct electricity!! I had been exposed to machine tools in high school and at a technical college, but had never seen anything like this! From that meager beginning I attempted to find additional information on the design of the key ingredients, the EDM power supply and control systems.
It didn't take long until I discovered that there is almost no information on EDM design available to the public at large. Many of you may have attempted to delve into the mysteries of the EDM power supply and control circuits and found the same lack of published information.
I spent about 2 1/2 years, and a lot of trial and error, to build a working automated ram type EDM. Since that time I have built many different versions of the EDM, including both RC (resistor capacitor) and pulse machines. In the last few years there have been a few articles on building RC type EDM power supplies. Most of these designs, in my opinion, are far too complex.
The intent of this book is to make available to you, the do-it-yourselfer, information on the EDM that to the best of my knowledge can be found in no other place. The large EDM manufactures certainly are not going to tell you anything about power supply/control circuit design. I know that from personal experience as one company told me "the kind of information you are seeking is proprietary and only actively worked on by about 20 people in the U.S.
I found the EDM patents which dated from the early 1970's to the mid 1980's of most benefit for my purposes. The reason I did the patent search to start with was to gather information that would be useful in designing and building my own EDM. It was in this era that machines were built using individual components and for the most part analog in design.
I would like to state that I am not an expert in the field of EDM design nor am I an electrical engineer (nor do I play one TV!). I am very interested in this subject and have spent many many hours researching the matter and building various EDM machines."
Hard to find valuable information if you're interested in EDM machines or if you want to build one in your shop. This information may not be available for long so now's your chance! Get it!
