Here is a gauge that very accurately measures the thickness of your wood as it comes out of the thickness planer or jointer. And in the case of the thickness planer you can take a reading even with the machine still running. Accuracy is down to 1/32 of an inch. Caliper is made of .090 anodized aircraft aluminum, with epoxy markings. It has a large 4†dial. The tool now even reads inside of pipes or turnings. American Made.
A VERY HANDY AND ACCURATE TOOL
An interesting note: A few years back I gave one of my thickness gauges to
a company in Dallas that sold hardwoods. They have a commercial thickness planer and I asked them to try it for testing purposes. About a year later I went by to purchase some lumber and I asked them how they liked the gauge. They said that they liked it but they could no trust it. I said why not. They said that a forklift truck ran over it in the shop and bent it up quite badly. They straightened up and still used it but were reluctant to trust it.
I said that I would bring out some metal gauge blocks that have an accuracy of 1000th of an inch and would test it for them. When I went by about a week later I brought to blocks with me and we tested it. Sure enough, it was just as accurate as when it was new. So I gave them a new one. They were happy and so was I .
