Those who weld, cut or fabricate metal know the need for a simple, reliable method to make marks on metal prior to cutting or welding. Here's a complete set for doing just that. This set contains one round and one flat soapstone holder with one soapstone for each marker. These are used for marking metal, while still allowing the marks to be easily removed after cutting or welding. The marks don’t melt from the heat of welding or cutting like many ink- or paint-type markers do either.
The round holder is about the diameter of a pencil, and has a pen-clip on it to keep it from falling out of your pocket. A neat little twist collet on the tip holds the soapstone and allows you to adjust the length sticking out as it wears with use; it holds better and can be adjusted to a finer degree even when you may be wearing gloves. There is one soapstone already in the holder. A small plastic cap is also included for the opposite end. This is different than the less expensive brass tube-based holders (I sell those as well; see my complete store). It's made of aluminum, with a knurled front grip and collet, so it writes like a pen or pencil. It’s larger in diameter than the brass holders, so it’s easier to hold while wearing welding gloves, and easier to pick up from a bench with gloves on as well.
The flat holder allows you to make wider marks, just like a chisel-tip ink marker, or use the narrow side for finer marks. An adjustable stop on the holder allows you to feed the soapstone the desired amount, or retract it completely when in a pocket. It holds the soapstone and allows you to adjust the length sticking out as it wears with use. There is one soapstone already in the holder.
No high-tech here, just simple tools that are easier to carry than a paint marker and won't leak in your pocket. When you're done with the mark you can rub it off if needed.
All in all, a really neat little pair of devices that saves time and makes the job easier. If you enjoy welding as I do, isn't it worth it to be able to address another obstacle to a good weld? You can probably see right away how these can save you time when laying out cuts and welds on metal.
