THINGS TO CHECK FOR WHEN CHOOSING A DEALER OF INDUSTRIAL SEWING MACHINES
4. What type of manuals are offered with the machine? Nearly all brokers will sell the machine with the manufacturers original manual, which tells you NOTHING about how to assemble or operate the machine. Most of the time, the manufacturer has just parts manuals that show you all of the parts of the machine, but that's it. If you have never assembled a machine before, how will you know what to do?
How can you tell that a sewing machine is made to sew leather or heavyweight fabrics?
We have seen a lot of sewing machine companies out there trying to sell industrial garment sewing machines as leather sewing machines. These are not classified as leather sewing machines!!! We have developed this section with the leather sewer in mind, but the same rules apply to those sewing with heavyweight industrial fabrics and vinyls. Sometimes its hard to tell by a photo, but here's what to look for to make sure that your sewing machine purchase will actually do what the seller says it will:
2. Any garment class sewing machine can easily be indentified by its sewing speed. Garment class machines sew much faster than a leather machine. With leather, SPEED KILLS!!!! Leather generates much more friction than fabric, and a higher sewing speed will melt thread and destroy needles when sewing through leather. If you try to sew faster than 2000 stitches per minute with a leather sewing machine, then you will melt thread, and your needle will literally start to smoke from the friction. The NS-0797 sews at about 800 stitches per minute stock out of the box, and it can be slowed down by changing the pulleys on the motor or adding a speed reducer. This speed is plenty slow enough to insure that the machine will not burn thread or needles, and yet allows you to zig along at a comfortable pace.
3. A telltale sign that a machine is made to sew leather is the presence of a large capacity bobbin and shuttle hook. Machines that sew leather need a larger hook to be able to tightly secure stitches. This is because the larger hook builds more inertia when turning and pulls the knot much more tightly. Most garment class machines have the smaller hooks, which are fine for sewing through fabrics, but not for leather. Look for the desigination of LARGE CAPACITY HOOK to insure that the machine has this style of hook.
4. Look at the overall construction of the machine. This is very hard to do with a photo, but perhaps try to call the seller to verify. The thread take up lever on a leather sewing machine is thick to handle the added tension a heavier thread generates. The bearings and bushings in the machine should be of heavy duty construction, along with the needle bars and presser foot bars. If the machine was designed to sew at high speeds, chances are these heavier duty items are not in the machine. The reason for this is because these heavier built components are not condusive to generating a machine that will sew fast. A fast sewing machine is a goal of the garment industry - not the leather industry.

The automatic lubrication of these machines is one of their most valuable assets. Just fill the oil pan in the bottom with about a quart of sewing machine oil, and throw away your oil can forever!!! The machine features a full cycle oil pump and wick lubricators which send oil to the critical friction points on the machine!!!! This machine also has a self-lubricated hook with an adjustable micrometric control valve down below. You can simply adjust this valve to regulate the oil flow to the hook.
This machine has a presser foot lift of about 1/2", and will comfortably sew just about anything up to 3/8" thick!!!!!
The motor for this unit is simply the finest motor we have ever used. The motor system for this machine is an electronically controlled variable speed DC servo motor. There is a knob on the back of the motor which allows you to fine tune your speed in any range from 300-3000 stitches per minute. The motor is also 63 percent more energy efficient than a regular clutch motor, and generates more than twice the amount of torque!!!!! There are also no clutch plates to change on this motor, and with only three moving parts, these motors are maintenance free!!!! The value of this motor is over $200.00!!!!!
