HEPA ULPA FFU Fan Air Filter Unit CleanRoom Laminar Flow 40 by 32" VFD variable speed motor drive.
This self-contained fan and filter is the type of filtration unit used for semiconductor, pharmaceutical surgical clean-rooms to remove particulate and germs from the air. It uses a deep pleated filter to proved lots of surface area for the air to pass through and the maximum size of hole in the filter membrane is such that nothing bigger than a fraction of a micron in size can pass through. This is considered an absolute filter. Smoke particles are too big to pass through-in fact, a common test is to used a smoking stick to make sure there are no leaks.

The pleated face you see in the images above are the output or clean side where the air comes out at a very controlled rate-typically between 60 and 100 linear feet per minute so that a non-turbulent of LAMINAR column of air flows away from the unit. These unit are most often mounted in the ceiling above the area you want to keep clean but can also work horizontally as shown here. They are often mounted in a hood with sides and a back to prevent disturbance of the laminar air flow column (and contamination of the clean space) by activity outside the desired clean space.

The electronics are in one end of the unit behind the door that has the status light shown above. (While this unit has always been kept wrapped in stretch (except while taking pictures), someone slide it across a concrete floor with the indicators on the bottom and scuffed them as shown above-its just cosmetic.)
The Siemens Micro Master Junior VFD or Variable Frequency Drive is what allows you to control the fan speed and thus the rate at which air flows through the unit.
The image below shows what is inside the gray electrical box shown several images above.
The outlet area of the unit is about 40 by 32 inches.
There is an electrical box attached to the end of the unit opposite where the speed control electronics are. The contents are a breaker switch, fuses terminal strip connectors and a relay contactor.
Th image above shows this is a Huntair SMS designed to run from 208 volts single phase but it should work from any 2XX volt source. The fan motor is 0.33 horsepower.
The image below shows the backside of the unit with the intake filter extreme right center.
We also have never used HEPA and ULPA filters elements (without fans) at a fraction of new replacement cost.
